baby-electrodeAproximadamente mas de 500 síndromes y no-síndromes son estimados en poseer expresividad audiovestibular (Pikus, 2002) Algunos síndromes como el de Waardenburg son reconocidos en presentar una mayor incidencia en expresividad vestibular en comparación a expresividad auditiva. Además, la disfunción pediátrica vestibular infantil, una de las seis categorías de migrañas (IHC 2004), un desorden neurológico, es la causa líder de mareos pediátricos (Gans, 2013).

Usando los Hitos motores maturacionales y los potenciales evocados migénicos vestibulares (VEMP), los infantes pueden ser examinados desde los 3 meses de edad. Existen datos normativos establecidos para las pruebas de comportamiento y electrofisiológicos en infantes. Estudios pediátricos en VEMP recién publicados (Kelsch, Schaefer, & Esquivel, 2006; Picciotti et al, 2007; Sheykholeslami, Megerian, Arnold, & Kaga, 2005; Zhou, Kenna, Stevens, & Licameli, 2009) sugieren que la prevalencia de la disfunción vestibular en infantes y niños con perdidas auditivas neurosensoriales pueden ser tan grande como el 90%, el cual es mucho mayor al que se creía anteriormente.

Las recomendaciones de AIB incluyen:

  • Evaluar a todos los niños con una pérdida auditiva neurosensorial congénita o adquirida.
  • Evaluar a niños con necesidades especiales u otros niños que presentan tono muscular, pobre, o con retraso al gatear, caminar, actividades coordinadas por ejemplo patear una pelota, etc.
  • Intervención con el físico- Psico terapeuta pediátrico haciendo énfasis en protocolos de integración sensorial y substitución basado en necesidades especificas del niño.
  • No asumir que un infante o niño es solamente “torpe”. Evaluaciones para esta población son rápidas, costo efectivas, no invasivas y disponibles.
