Program Description

This  is a 6-hour competency-based, workshop that  will provide doctoral physical therapy students with a thorough overview of the most currently accepted assessment and management aspects of sport concussion. Introduction to the six types of concussion trajectories (vestibular, ocular, mood and anxiety, post-traumatic migraine, chronic/fatigue, and cervical) will incorporate hands-on lab activities. The course will also discuss prevention strategies, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), return to play and return to school guidelines.

 Course Objectives

  • Discuss the functional anatomy of the central nervous and balance system and how they relate to the pathophysiology of a concussion.
  • Identify the 6 types of concussion trajectories
Recognize the signs and symptoms of a concussion, second impact syndrome, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy and their impact on recovery.
  • Integrate cortical and vestibular rehabilitation into a comprehensive concussion management program with longitudinal therapeutic outcome measures.
  • Describe and develop return-to-play and return-to-learn strategies.

The American Institute of Balance (AIB) is pleased to extend a unique opportunity to students to receive a 6-hour professional development program at virtually no cost.  Our goal is to offer a supplemental learning experience for students who have an interest in vestibular rehabilitation and sport-related concussion.  Seating is limited, so register early to save your seat.
