This is a 6-hour competency-based, workshop that will provide doctoral physical therapy students with a thorough overview of the most currently accepted assessment and management aspects of sport concussion. Introduction to the six types of concussion trajectories (vestibular, ocular, mood and anxiety, post-traumatic migraine, chronic/fatigue, and cervical) will incorporate hands-on lab activities. The course will also discuss prevention strategies, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), return to play and return to school guidelines.
- Discuss the functional anatomy of the central nervous and balance system and how they relate to the pathophysiology of a concussion.
- Identify the 6 types of concussion trajectories
Recognize the signs and symptoms of a concussion, second impact syndrome, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy and their impact on recovery.
- Integrate cortical and vestibular rehabilitation into a comprehensive concussion management program with longitudinal therapeutic outcome measures.
- Describe and develop return-to-play and return-to-learn strategies.
