Kenny et al (BMC Sports Sci Med Rehabil 11, (2019)) submit that textured insoles offer tactile information that wearers can use to stabilize themselves as they stand. The researchers investigated the effect of textured insoles on postural sway in healthy adults under several standing conditions. The shoes’ had their greatest effects when subjects stood on both feet, with their eyes closed. The authors argue that this added somatosensory stimuli might be the basis of a host of fall interventions for people with impaired vision.
