January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month

The American Institute of Balance enters the New Year promoting increased awareness of glaucoma. Glaucoma is the most common cause of irreversible visual impairment worldwide. According to studies VISION AND BALANCE(Kotecha, et al., Balance Control in Glaucoma, 2012) the risk of falling in older adults is exacerbated in the presence of ophthalmic disease because this will diminish the visual input required to maintain balance. As vision and balance go hand in hand, it is advisable to consider the patient’s ophthalmic status when incorporating balance retraining, activities of daily living, and assistive devices.
